Getting started in photography
Steps to go from a strong portfolio to your first paying photography client.
- 1
Build a focused portfolio
Shoot friends, family, or styled/collaborative sessions (trade for print credit, not always free) to build 15-20 strong images in the specific style (portrait, family, event) you want to book paid work in.
- 2
Get liability and equipment insurance
Many venues require proof of liability insurance before allowing you to shoot on-site, and equipment coverage protects your gear from theft or damage — both are worth having before your first paid booking.
- 3
Set your package pricing
Price 2-3 clear packages (e.g. mini session, standard session, full event coverage) rather than an open hourly rate — clients convert better against a defined package than an hourly quote.
- 4
Build a booking and contract process
Use a proposal/contract tool to send agreements and collect a retainer before you hold a date, so you're never shooting without a signed contract and deposit.
- 5
Set up gallery delivery
Choose a client gallery platform so finished images arrive as a polished, downloadable (and optionally print-purchasable) experience instead of a raw file dump.
- 6
Get your first bookings and reviews
Start with friends, family, and local Facebook/Nextdoor groups, offer a limited-time mini-session rate to build reviews fast, and ask every happy client for a Google review and a tagged social post.
