Photography contract template

A signed agreement before the shoot protects both sides on the things clients dispute most: what's included, who owns the images, and what happens if either side needs to reschedule.

Session scope and deliverables

Specify session length or event coverage hours, number of final edited images delivered, turnaround time, and how images are delivered (online gallery, download link, prints).

Usage rights and licensing

State whether the client receives personal-use rights only or commercial usage rights, and that you (the photographer) retain copyright and portfolio/marketing usage unless otherwise negotiated.

Retainer and payment schedule

Require a non-refundable retainer (typically 20-50%) to hold the date, with the balance due at or before the session/event; specify accepted payment methods.

Rescheduling and cancellation policy

Define how much notice is needed to reschedule without penalty, what happens to the retainer on client cancellation, and your own weather/illness reschedule policy for outdoor sessions.

Model release and image usage

Include a model release for portrait and family clients covering how you may use images (portfolio, website, social media, contest entries) unless the client opts out in writing.

Liability and backup plan

Note that you carry equipment and liability insurance, and describe your backup gear/data plan (dual card slots, same-day backup) in case of equipment failure during a paid event.

This is general guidance, not legal advice. Consider having a local attorney review your final agreement.
