Music Lessons contract template
A lesson agreement prevents common disputes over cancellations, makeup lessons, and end-of-year gaps — and signals professionalism to parents before the first lesson.
Instrument, style, and goals
Specify the instrument(s), genre focus (classical, jazz, pop, etc.), and any concrete goals (e.g. grade-level exam, recital repertoire) so both parties share expectations.
Schedule and lesson length
State the recurring day and time, lesson length (30 or 60 minutes), and how you handle school-year gaps like holidays or testing weeks.
Cancellation and makeup policy
Define the notice window (24-48 hours is standard), whether you offer makeup lessons, how many makeups per semester are allowed, and what happens to lessons cancelled without notice — a no-makeup policy for late cancellations is common and protects your time.
Practice expectations
Outline a minimum weekly practice target appropriate to the student's level; note that progress depends heavily on consistent practice between lessons.
Materials and equipment
Confirm what the student must provide: a suitable instrument at home, practice books, a metronome or app, and any sheet music you'll assign.
Payment terms
Specify the monthly tuition or per-lesson rate, due date (first lesson of the month is common), accepted payment methods, and whether you charge a late-payment fee.
This is general guidance, not legal advice. Consider having a local attorney review your final agreement.
