Getting started in resume writing & career coaching

Steps to go from resume-writing or coaching know-how to your first paying solo client.

  1. 1

Decide your specialty and get certified

Choose whether you're primarily a resume writer, a career coach, or both, and pursue a recognized credential (CPRW for resume writing; ICF or IACC for coaching) — certification is a strong trust signal in a market with very low barriers to entry.

  2. 2

    Build 2-3 portfolio samples

Create anonymized before/after resume samples (with permission, or using your own history) across a couple of industries or seniority levels to show prospective clients concrete proof of your work.

  3. 3

    Set your pricing structure

Set your hourly rate first, then build flat package prices around it (estimated hours × rate, rounded to a clean number) so resume packages stay profitable even though they're sold as a flat fee.

  4. 4

Set up your service agreement and intake process

Create a standard contract, an intake questionnaire (current resume, target roles, career history), and a secure way to exchange documents before starting any paid work.

  5. 5

    Decide on liability protection

General/professional liability insurance is inexpensive for a laptop-based service business and covers you if a client disputes the quality or outcome of your work.

  6. 6

    Get your first clients

Start with your professional network and LinkedIn, list your services on platforms like The Muse or Fiverr Pro to build early reviews, and join local job-search or professional-association groups where people are actively looking for resume/coaching help.
